Actions to Improve the Watershed

A lot can be done to improve Claggett Creek.

Invasive plants can be removed and replaced with beneficial plants and trees that provide cool shade.

Low levels of dissolved oxygen make it difficult for fish to breath.  Low oxygen levels result from decaying organic waste and dead algae. These in turn come from improper disposal of  yard debris such as lawn clippings and from fertilizer runoff  which provides nutrients feeding the growth of algae. These can all be addressed through effective education giving landowners the information they need to act responsibly.

Bacteria such as E.Coli in surface water is a human health issue. Claggett Creek has elevated levels of E.Coli associated with waste from ducks and geese, nuisance wildlife such as nutria, and our very own pets.

Mercury a heavy metal, occurs naturally in our soils. When soils erode into our waterways, mercury levels in the water rises making the water less safe.  Actions to stabilize banks and reduce construction runoff, minimizes this risk.

Join us in working to make the Claggett Creek Watershed a healthy, safe area available and beneficial to the community.
